Hi Everyone, I live in South Florida primarily, but when I used to make money, LOL!, I used to live in Destin too. I would go there for a month, come back here for a month, go there, come back, etc.... If you haven't been there, you need to go! So beautiful! Sugar white sand beaches, nice country type folks, etc... Not over developed! This is where I used to stay: www.silverbeachtowers.com/I hope to go back there soon! SBG

Seoul is very cool. Quite different from other parts of Asia. There are direct flights from MIA I am sure, usually about 1k to get there round trip. I would defiantly recommend the trip! Incheon International has hubs to all over Asia, so its usually a connecting flight when ever you travel to China/Thailand/Cambodia etc. Better plan to have a guide though! 3rd world Asia can be very tricky and its pretty easy to end up in a body bag if you find yourself in the "wrong" part of the city.

I agree Mic, I found myself in a tiny jail cell with about 12 others and a rooster on the Thai/Cambodian border in Aranyaprathet. spent 3 nights in there and about 5 months in and out fighting it. ...all over a faked visa. Very interesting though, wouldn't change a thing except maybe being allowed to go back in the country!

Lol I was held too over a visa, although mine was a seriously overstayed visa... and I didn't have.cash to pay off the border officials. This is a.bad idea! Needless to say I managed to convince them to let me out of custody to get them money. Two months and a few trips to Laos later I escaped paying nothing! If only the US was this easy

That's hilarious, Mic. I don't come across too many people who can relate. You sound like a far better negotiator. I had a fake stamp, purchased at khao San, for Myanmar. The immigration officer asked how I got to Myanmar? I closed my eyes, flashed back to geography class... saw the top of my desk and the inside of my elbow. Very quietly I tried, "...boat?" they said, "ok thank you, come with me." all of the sudden, no one spoke English, and the few that did forgot. I didn't make out so well.
the moral of the story -pay attention in geography, or you could end up in a cage with a chicken. The bonus, however, is when I get kicked out of a bar, I can yell, "I've been kicked out of countries better than this!"
Going to Hong Kong in November, I'll reflect on past mistakes before travelling....
Thanks for bringing up a memorable topic. Out of curiosity, how long was your overstay?

I can totally picture the chicken, you can only appreciate that if you have experienced that area of the world haha.
You are allowed 30 days with NO visa and I decided I was going to bounce around to Laos/Cambodia etc to avoid the stamp. Long story short, I found myself in Bangkok and Ayutthaya for three months solid and had to exit the country rather quickly. No time for recharging my visa. Bad idea
You got your stamp at khao San Road? Lots of fun and illegal things around there! Falang central!

I lived in Pensacola in the mid 1990s, made trips to Destin/Ft. Walton Beach. Beautiful area (sugar white beaches of Emerald Coast), but terribly humid weather and insects kept me indoors mostly. I'm nostalgic about the terrific, cheap seafood at Joe Pattie's---he used to cut a little extra of the sashimi grade tuna for my wife. Those chicken leg sized shrimp, fresh off the boat, and cooked crawdads by the pound! These things, were it available, would cost a small fortune today in SoCal.

I've been to lots of different places. Right now, I want to tour the California Coast with my wife. Stop at all the interesting spots along the way. Maybe this Fall when the seasons change and it gets a bit cooler.
Yes, SE Asia is fun. Been there many times. Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, Indonnesia, Bali. They party hard down there. Just head to the disco or the local pub and you'll find lots of entertainment.
Watch out to the motorcycles that race at night. Day and night are totally different down there. It's all business in daylight and all fun after it gets dark.
Kuala Lumpur is a city that never sleeps. If you wake up at 2am, you can get in a taxi and find a "hokker stall" that will go till 7 am.
No, that's not "Hooker stall". A hokker stall is a meeting place (parking lot normally) where individuals pull out food service carts and the "night crew" hang out, chat and have fun. Lots of little stalls selling things.
Would I go there again?? Maybe. With my wife, yes. It's changed a bit since I was there last. Much bigger and more crazy.
My ideal vacation spot is a golf resort with a pool. lol

Its so refreshing to see so much respect in a culture. Naturally most of my time when in the east is spent in Bangkok. Talk about a city that never sleeps! It sometimes gets more lively at night than during the day!

Hi Mic,
Its not too bad.
Like anywhere, you have your expensive areas on the water, beach ,etc... then your cheaper areas not in scenic areas, or lower income areas.

Its so refreshing to see so much respect in a culture. Naturally most of my time when in the east is spent in Bangkok. Talk about a city that never sleeps! It sometimes gets more lively at night than during the day! I found the Thai people to be wonderful people. Of course you run into some nutty people anywhere you go, but in general they are very understanding and caring people. In some ways, the culture and respect for elders/culture is much more rigid than here. The funny part about being in Malaysia for so long was that I got to see the real lives of people. Say one thing, do another. Multiple sets of books for each company. You know, the good, the bad and the ugly. My favorite spot was a little island off Borneo called Labuan. I would go back there in a heartbeat. It was very much like I imagine Hawaii was in the 50s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labuanwww.cuti.com.my/hotel/info.php?id=1522&hotel=Waterfront+Financial+LabuanI miss the curry the most though. I lived on that stuff when I was there. Never visited any jails though. Actually, I took a tour of the old jail in KL. Was interesting to say the least. I found the best part of all of my trips being the people I shared my experiences with and getting to see the real lives of individuals. Visiting hometowns and families. Celebrating holidays and making the time to do what the locals do. It's totally different from tourist stuff. You get to see how they eat, dream, sleep and survive.
