Samsung acquires CSR’s patents and personnel for $310 million
Samsung has bought a stack of mobile technology patents to help boost its chip business
Samsung has announced that it has signed a deal with UK chipmaker CSR to acquire a portfolio of mobile and location technology patents.
The deal, which cost Samsung a cool $310 million (around £198 million), also sees the South Korean manufacturer taking on CSR’s 310-person-strong technology and handset team.
Speaking to Reuters, Samsung explained the motivation behind the move, the main idea being that this will boost Samsung’s own microchip business, in particular the development of chips for both the company’s own smartphones and tablets, including the Android Galaxy line, and those of companies which outsource to it for chip hardware, such as Apple.
Samsung president Stephen Woo, said: ’By leveraging CSR's R&D capability, Samsung will strengthen its application processor platform and solidify its position as a leading semiconductor solutions provider.’
However, analysts also believe the acquisition may be a way for Samsung to armour itself against patent disputes, particularly those frequently levelled against it by Apple.
Brian Park, an analyst for Tong Yang Securities, described the acquired portfolio to Reuters as a potential ‘buffer’ in such patent cases.
As well as acquiring the patents, which includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tech, and expert personnel, Samsung also agreed to invest $34.4 million in CSR with a 4.9 per cent share of the company
CSR chief executive Joep van Beurden commented on the deal, saying: ‘There is a big war going on between the giants of the semiconductor industry like Qualcomm Inc, Intel and Samsung LSI to deliver the complete solution into smartphones.’
‘Our team and technology - location and connectivity - is in its own right an extremely important part of that platform, but it is even more important if it completes your product offering and that is exactly what Samsung is doing.’
