Warren Buffett's newspaper group buys North Carolina paper
The News & Record is North Carolina's third-largest newspaper with a 100,000 Sunday circulation, and our journalism competes favorably with papers that are much larger. In state press association competition, the News & Record regularly excels in categories competing with much larger newspapers. The News & Record has won first place in the General Excellence category in two of the past three years.
For the past three years, we've been recognized for our work by the Missouri School of Journalism's Lifestyle Journalism Awards. We also place regularly in other national contests, including the Green Eyeshade Awards for the Society of Professional.
One reason for this recognition has been our intense focus on local coverage. We now cover our community more closely than ever before. We are experimenting with new ways to tell stories through narrative, graphics and reader submissions. Every member of the news staff is looking for ways to interact with readers. You'll see more stories about unsung heroes, more lively design, edgier writing and the most aggressive hard news and enterprise coverage in the region.
We work in the central North Carolina region known as the Piedmont Triad. The region is centered on Greensboro, where the paper is based, and stretches throughout the rolling Piedmont region of North Carolina. Greensboro, home to more than 230,000 people, is centrally located in the state and joins nearby High Point, Winston-Salem and the surrounding counties to form the more than 1 million-strong Triad metro area. Greensboro is convenient to both the state capital Raleigh and Charlotte, and because of its highway system and central location, is fast becoming a major Southeastern transportation hub. Commercial flights leave daily from the Piedmont Triad International Airport, and the city is an easy drive from both the beach and the mountains.
If staying home on the weekends is more your style, you'll find a unique downtown complete with homegrown bars and restaurants, a growing live music scene and regionally renowned arts and production venues. National acts like Jimmy Buffet, Van Halen, Robert Earl Keen, Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys and Beyonce Knowles have made their way to Greensboro in recent years. City leaders have focused aggressively on revitalizing the downtown, and a new minor league baseball stadium anchors the area. Downtown's Triad Stage boasts a full line-up of professional plays and musicals, and the city's five colleges and universities consistently bring world-renowned speakers. Those same colleges offer a host of continuing education opportunities, and opportunities for community service abound. The region is also very family friendly with scores of community parks, churches and outdoor recreation areas.
