Of the people who actually want guns, 90% should never be allowed near them. No disrespect to law abiding citizens who own guns as there is NO issue there

That is why I question how the mentally ill are handled and treated. That opens up another huge can of worms though.

I think it is a combination of movies, games, etc... that just desensitize people to shooting and killing.
Add that, and a person who is unstable and something bad sets them off, and you have a recipe for disaster.

These games today are so real that people that are unstable can not seperate game from reality.

IMO I support MORE guns. There are more citizens that would be able to protect each other when acts of terrorism like this happen.
Face it. If someone wants something they are going to get it. Drugs, Sex, Guns. Regardless of their "legal" definition.
Empowering the people to defend themselves and their common citizens with firearms is an obligation of the constitution.
My heart is with those who were affected by this. I cant imagine what it is like.

Truly, I don't see any realistic ways to stop things like this from happening.

An unfathomable tragedy. As a father, I cannot grasp the enormity of such a loss and the growing prevalence of such evil.

As a father of similar school age children it is heart rending. There are no easy answers to the problem of mental illness, and what a motivated person can wreak upon others. The kid could have just as well constructed a bomb if guns were not available.
The question that the media has not addressed is why did the Mom have 4 guns, including a Bushmaster assault rifle? A 9 mm Glock for self-defense is one thing, but an assault rifle? It just does not fit when you couple that with the fact that she taught elementary school children.
It is estimated that 1 in 5 people will suffer from some form of mental illness, i.e. depression, substance abuse, etc. during their lifetime. A very sobering thought since it means that it is everywhere around you. There will be a lot of debate on gun control in the coming days. What is needed more is what people must to do to take care of those around them.
Self defense is only as good as your ability to know what is occurring around you. If the principal in the school had been packing could she have prevented this tragedy? Maybe, maybe not. One thing is certain. The mother of the shooter must have had some issues given the number of firearms in her possession.
Everyone needs to have good situational awareness, and accurate information is vital. This board provides some sanity in what is an otherwise insane world (be it a crazed killer) or what has drawn us together on this board (Kodak). Keep your spirits up in this holiday season and be thankful for what you have. Life is precious.
